Thurrock Council to take on UDC powers

By Jamie Carpenter Wednesday, 08 September 2010

Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation is to be wound up and its functions taken over by Thurrock Borough Council, the coalition Government has announced.

Thames Gateway minister Bob Neill said that TTGDC would cease operation and become part of Thurrock Borough Council from 1 April 2012.

The urban development corporation will move into the council’s premises by March 2011 to work more closely with the local authority ahead of the change, Neill said.

The previous Labour government had announced plans for housing and regeneration quango the Homes & Communities Agency to take on the UDC’s powers.

But last week it emerged that the plans to merge the agency with the HCA had been ditched.

Neill said: "Putting Thurrock Borough Council back in command of local regeneration puts decision-making back into democratically elected hands – marking a new era in the area and giving local people more influence to shape the place in which they live."
