Plant aims to limit carbon

Planning, 5 September 2008

A £500 million gas-fired power plant on Teesside has been approved by energy minister Malcolm Wicks.

Thor Cogeneration Ltd is to build the 1,020MW combined heat and power plant at Seal Sands near Billingham. Its carbon emissions will be 60 per cent lower than current coal-fired plants, the company said.

Project manager Paul Verrill said: "The plant will provide greener, reliable energy at a time when many power generation assets around the UK - particularly ageing coal and nuclear facilities - are reaching the end of their operating life."

Construction will begin next year and power could be supplied to the grid by 2012. It is expected to create up to 1,000 construction jobs and 60 during its operation.
