Fair Games: Big name backers

Regen.net, 20 July 2010

Find out who has signed up to our Olympics campaign - and how to get involved

Jackie Sadek - Chair, British Urban Regeneration Association "The London mayor and the Government made clear commitments to the Games leading to regeneration in east London. Delivering on those commitments means a sustained programme of action from all parties, including the Olympic Park Legacy Company and the host boroughs. The economic development of east London will be critical to transforming the prospects of residents in some of the country's most deprived communities and to London as a whole. There is mixed experience in using major events as catalysts for wider regeneration: we should learn from those, like Manchester, who saw such events as part of a long-term plan."

Professor Anne Power - Head of London School of Economics, housing and communities "I am happy to include my name in this campaign."

Dee Doocey - Chair, London Assembly, and vice chair, economic development, culture, sport and tourism committee "London won the bid to host the Olympics largely because of the promises made by Lord Coe about the 'legacy' the Games would provide: economic regeneration, help for local disadvantaged communities, a new deal for disabled people and increased participation in sport. Delivering in full on these promises has never been more important."

Professor Michael Parkinson Director, European Institute for Urban Affairs, Liverpool John Moores University "Sharing the benefits of the Olympics with local people was always an important goal. However, at a time of big spending cuts for regeneration, it is absolutely crucial that local communities see some benefits and do not become even more alienated by dashed expectations. I am very happy to sign up to this campaign."

John Biggs - AM Member for City and East, London Assembly "I am happy to support the campaign. The Games are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a real difference to east London in legacy, to balance the differences in the standard of living across the capital by building a sustainable community that can support itself economically and socially. The vital ingredients to delivering a real difference to east London are housing and skills. Training needs to focus on skilling people for modern industries such as media, digital technology and green industries that will form the core of new business in the area. And we need to create a community in which people want to stay."

Liz Peace - Chief executive, British Property Federation "The British Property Federation is happy to support this campaign."
