Work Experience with Mike King, senior research consultant, AMT-I

Nicola Carroll, Regeneration & Renewal, 9 May 2008

Mike King is senior research consultant at AMT-I, a division of Action for Market Towns set up to help community partnerships in small towns access information and advice.

He is currently compiling case studies from across the country to examine what constitutes an effective partnership, so that partnerships will be able to compare their work with that of peers.

What has been your most beneficial career experience to date? Working on the Rural Pathfinder Project at Northamptonshire County Council. It provided me with a grounding in regeneration and renewal that enabled me to progress to my current job, which combines my passions for regeneration practice and research.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given? An ex-colleague advised me to always be prepared with background research in all areas of work, whether it is for a simple telephone call, a meeting or a full-blown public consultation.

What's the best training you've had?

Studying for postgraduate qualifications with the Open University turned around my career. It was a complete culture shock as you need a huge amount of self-discipline when you have to study long into the night after a hard day's work. Evidently I enjoyed it though: I am currently studying part-time for an MA in history. My dissertation is about the history of football.

What book would you recommend? For work, Simeon J Yates's Doing Social Science Research. For pleasure, The Miracle of Castel di Sangro by Joe McGinniss - it's simply the greatest book about football ever written.

What do you wish you'd known when you started out? I wish I had worked out what I wanted to do sooner. After graduating, I did not have an idea of what career path I wanted to take - but now it has all fallen into place. I just wish I had got into regeneration earlier.
