Daniel Marshall

Daniel Marshall

Transport Planner, Engineering Consultancy, Halcrow's Newcastle Office.

David Marshall has chalked up more than 20 years' experience in transport planning, mostly in his native North East, after following up his initial town planning degree with a specialist transport course.

Marshall supplemented his undergraduate training in town and country planning at Liverpool John Moores University with a masters in transport engineering and logistics at the University of Newcastle. Most of his work experience has been with local authorities in the North East, but four years ago he switched over to a consultancy with a move to engineering consultancy Halcrow's Newcastle office.

He is responsible for increasing the consultancy's business in the region. There is plenty of scope, given the volume of regeneration activity in the area, although finding the investment remains a problem. He is set to change roles again soon, when he will move to the North East Regional Assembly as transport manager.

"You need people skills much more than you did in the past," Marshall advises those embarking on a career in transport planning. "It is no longer just about getting roads or bridges built. Transport planners need to think much more widely. For example, we need to know what the strategic health authority is doing because the location of new hospitals has a big impact on traffic."
