Walsall Council
Introduction and Mission Statement
The Borough's regeneration agenda is ambitious and challenging but real progress and momentum is being achieved. Regeneration never stands still; we need to be constantly developing and promoting new ideas and approaches to some really challenging issues. The key strategic focus for Walsall Council is achieving sustainable transformation, this is the only platform that will enable Walsall to halt the population decline and bring stability to Walsall. We have a strong partner commitment and interface alongside a commitment from members and officers to get it right for the future. We work together with a wide range of partners to enhance capacity and service, as an example, in March 2004 Walsall Regeneration Company (WRC) was formed to deliver regeneration within the Urban Regeneration Company area. The WRC is backed by Walsall Council, Advantage West Midlands Partnerships and English Partnerships.
However, the Council is also focussed on developing innovative programmes to:
- revitalise our district centres
- transform our gateways and corridors
- regenerate our neighbourhoods
- modernise our economy and skills base
- build sustainable partnerships
- develop an enterprise and investment culture
- improve the regional and national profile of the borough
Together these programmes and initiatives will provide balanced and sustainable regeneration.
Employment opportunities
Whilst our direction of travel is clearly established our staff are the ones to make things happen and to make a mark. Together we are focused on attracting £600 million of public and private sector finance in the next 10 to 15 years creating 15,000 jobs, the reality of this is illustrated by the fact that over the last year, over 50 million pounds worth of development has been approved to be completed by 2009. Our regeneration teams will provide a range of functions in relation to the promotion and co-ordination of development projects as a means of attracting inward investment and securing regeneration. As well as providing mentoring, support and commitment to and for junior members of the teams we focus on looking at ensuring the effective delivery of the environmental services improvement programmes.
Training and career development
Through personal commitment and clear actions we will promote the Council's employment policies, with particular reference to diversity, equality of access and treatment in employment, service delivery and community involvement. We also support and develop a working culture within those services that reflects the corporate vision. Our employees are responsible for their own self development on a continuous basis and for developing and maintaining a substantial body of up-to-date knowledge of their specialist area and detailed generalist knowledge across a wide spectrum of related fields, and as such they will be expected to undertake suitable development and training both internally and externally.
