London Borough of Newham
Introduction
Newham's landscape is changing fast with the emphasis on NEW.
The borough has the youngest population in the capital and it's growing. An unequalled programme of renewal and regeneration matches this youthful energy and vitality. Add the arrival of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 and it's clear that this part of east London is a place where things are happening fast.
We're building the Olympic Village on land set aside for the later phases of our £4bn Stratford City development. The vast Olympic stadium and surrounding open space provides Newham with the potential for a stunning legacy post 2012. New jobs, sporting facilities, a park and affordable, environmentally friendly housing are just part of that legacy.
In less than ten years we are projecting a population growth across the borough of around 100,000. Our target is to create 50,000 homes to house these residents by 2020.
Innovative transport plans are rapidly making Newham one of the best-connected areas in the capital. Stratford International Railway station is due to open in 2010 as part of the fast link-route between Kings Cross St Pancras, north Kent and the continent. Planned new DLR extensions between Canning Town and Stratford International and the green light for the new east-west Crossrail will add to this developing infrastructure.
Massive regeneration projects such as the £3.8 billion Canning Town and Custom House programme and Silvertown Quays are beginning to transform these dockland sites. With the arrival of the world-class Biota! Aquarium within Silvertown Quays Newham will be firmly on the tourist map.
Employment opportunities
Ambitious but achievable plans need ambitious and talented people to make them happen. We're seeking planners at every level from graduate to principal, as well as building control officers, regeneration specialists and graduate and senior transportation officers.
Training and career development
Career development is high on our agenda and we're committed to training our staff through hands-on experience, peer learning and external courses. We will challenge you too. You could soon find yourself engaging on one of our major capital projects or contributing to our business development strategy.
Employment policies
We demonstrate our appreciation of staff with a generous and comprehensive range of benefits. These include a contributory final salary pension scheme, flexible working options and possible access to key worker housing. We actively promote diversity and equality in our employment practice and strive to be a leading employer in the field.
