Universities question new diplomas, says report

Susie Sell, Regen.net, 25 August 2009

Students who take the Government's new diplomas may also be required to take additional qualifications in order to secure a place at university, according to a report.

The study, which was commissioned by the Department for Schools, Children and Families (DCSF), said that some universities are considering requiring students who take diplomas, such as the built environment and construction diploma, to take an additional A-Level qualification in order to secure a university place.

Diplomas - which combine work-based training with classroom study - were sat by around 10,000 pupils aged 14 to 19 for the first time this year.

The study also found that admissions officers at top-ranking universities were less likely to accept the diploma as equivalent to 3.5 A-Level qualifications – the scoring recommended by admissions authority Ucas - than universities at the lower end of the higher education league tables.

Furthermore, six of the 19 higher education institutions (HIEs) involved in the survey questioned whether, in practice, diploma studies would turn out to be adequate preparation for university courses.

However, the report also found that the HIEs questioned welcomed the "breadth of learning inherent in diplomas and their potential to widen participation".
