NWDA invests £3.9m in Wirral development

David Hickey, Regen.net, 9 February 2010

The North-West Regional Development Agency is to provide £3.9 million to ensure the second phase of a Wirral seaside town scheme can begin.

The investment will enable Neptune Developments and Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council to begin the delivery of phase two of the Brand New Brighton scheme, which will include the creation of a new model boating lake, a promenade, car parking and improved access across a 14ha stretch of the town’s waterfront, NWDA said.

Phase 2 of the project aims to:

• create 714 new jobs through a series of new retail and leisure facilities by 2012
• attract six new businesses to New Brighton
• deliver 20,667 sq m of new floor space through the new retail and leisure facilities created
• deliver a programme of public realm and environmental improvements across the 14ha site

Other elements of the Brand New Brighton scheme include a Morrison Supermarket, a Travelodge hotel, an outdoor lido, a cinema, a fitness centre, restaurants and bars.

The commercial and leisure facilities aim to be completed by summer 2011, Neptune Developments has said.

NWDA has already invested £3.6 million into the first phase of the scheme. Phase one saw the construction of an 800-seat pavilion and conference centre, completed last year. Phase 2 of the scheme will lever a further investment of £33.6 million from Neptune Developments, NWDA said.
