Homes unit mooted for Northern Ireland

Regeneration & Renewal, 9 November 2009

Plans to establish a unit within the Northern Ireland Executive to coordinate housing policy are among ideas being considered by a commission asked to create a long-term vision for Northern Irish housing.

The report by the Commission on the Future of Housing in Northern Ireland considers the merits of creating a "time-limited unit" within the Executive that would coordinate work across departments and agencies with housing responsibilities to try to address the "ongoing issue of the need for more cross-departmental working".

The report suggests this unit would run in a similar way to the Housing Supply Taskforce set up by the Scottish Government.

It says: "A single unit working with government with a clear steer and support from relevant ministers (could) drive successful partnerships across government and the public sector with beneficial outcomes for communities."
