Home Office to reduce delays in issuing Asbos

Jennifer Sprinks, Regen.net, 3 July 2009

Measures to reduce delays in issuing antisocial behaviour orders have been unveiled by home secretary Alan Johnson.

In his first speech on crime and communities, Johnson also outlined measures to strengthen partnerships and coordination at neighbourhood level, and provide greater support for victims who report antisocial behaviour.

He pledged to make it easier to report antisocial behaviour in order to restore confidence among communities that those who commit crimes are punished.

"When these powers are used, they are highly effective," he said.

"And they demonstrate clearly that the authorities are on the side of the public."

He added that nearly two thirds of people desist from antisocial behaviour after the first intervention by the police.
