Child poverty targets planned for councils

Leon Walker, Regen.net, 28 January 2009

Councils could be required to meet local targets on child poverty, under plans announced by the Government today.

Under the proposals, local authorities in England could be required to set a child poverty target for the percentage of children in their areas living in low income families.

The measure is one of number of proposals included in a consultation document setting out proposals for how the Government could meet its ambition to end child poverty by 2020.

It precedes a bill intended to enshrine this pledge in legislation later this year.

The Government is also planning to set up a national commission on child poverty and report annually to Parliament on its progress against child poverty targets.

Children's secretary Ed Balls said: "This consultation calls on everybody to play their part: we all must redouble our efforts to make sure tackling child poverty is a priority for all of us."

The Government also announced plans to pilot schemes to parents "of younger children" to help them prepare for employment by paying childcare costs when they attend training or counselling.
