Support charity to be investigated

Herpreet Kaur Grewal, Regen.net, 27 October 2008

The Government's housing agency has launched an inquiry into the financial management of a charity with a £21 million turnover that provides support services to some of the most vulnerable groups, it emerged this week.

The Housing Corporation has appointed Philip Rego and Simon Bevan, both partners at audit, accounting and business services firm Stoy Hayward, to conduct the inquiry into the Novas Scarman Group.

Both will be allowed access to any information or documents that they believe are relevant to the inquiry. At the end of the inquiry they will report to the Corporation's board.

A Housing Corporation spokeswoman refused to give a reason for the inquiry.

The Novas Scarman Group was formerly the Novas Ouvertures Group and at December 2007 owned around 190 housing units and managed a further 480 units.

The Novas Group provides support services for the homeless, rough sleepers and disadvantaged black and minority groups.

Last year, an assessment into the group by the Corporation showed that "exposures exist[ed] [in its financial viability] which make it vulnerable to deterioration".
