Enough brownfield land for 1 million homes, says report

Ben Cook, Regen.net, 5 September 2008

There is enough brownfield land in England to accommodate more than one million homes, according to new Government statistics.

Figures published by the Department for Communities and Local Government revealed that, in 2007, a total of 26,510ha of brownfield land in England was suitable for housing and could potentially accommodate approximately 1,051,000 homes.

Of the brownfield land suitable for housing, 14,780ha was currently in use, while 11,720ha was vacant or derelict, according to the figures.

The total amount of brownfield land in England decreased by around six per cent in total between 2002 and 2007. The total amount of brownfield land in England in 2007 stood at 62,130ha.

The report added that, though the amount of brownfield land suitable for housing had decreased by seven per cent since 2002, the “estimated housing capacity” of brownfield land in England had increased by 19 per cent.
