Bristol drug agencies to work with dealers

Leon Walker, Regen.net, 28 August 2008

Drug and alcohol agencies in Bristol are to offer opportunities in education and rehabilitation to drug dealers in an attempt to tackle the city's rising substance abuse problem, in a scheme that organisers claim is the first of its kind.

The Switch scheme will work in partnership with probation officers and prisons to offer education, counselling, rehabilitation, housing and financial advice services to dealers and users who have either served time or are at risk of going to prison, organisers say.

Nick Bentley, Director of partner agency Ideal said: "In the long-term, jail isn't the answer as many re-offend once they get out.  They may be addicted to drugs or know no other way of making money so easily fall back into old ways."
