Eastern European migration has dropped

Herpreet Kaur Grewal, Regen.net, 21 August 2008

The number of Eastern European immigrants entering the UK to work has fallen, according to figures published today.

Home Office statistics show that between April and June 2008 there were 40,000 applications to register to work in the UK from nationals of the eight countries that joined the European Union in 2004.

This is a drop of 14,000 from the same period last year and is the lowest level since the eight countries joined the EU.

The numbers of Bulgarians and Romanians applying to work in the UK have also dropped to their lowest level since they became members of the EU, according to the figures.
