Thames Gateway port contract to be signed today

Samantha Thorpe, Regen.net, 20 August 2008

The developers behind plans for a new container port in the Thames Gateway growth area will today award a contract to build the first phase of the scheme.

The developers behind the project, DP World, will awarded the scheme's first major contract to Laing O'Rourke and Dredging International, who will now take forward the first phase of the port's construction, building berths for three ships and more than a kilometre of quay.

The London Gateway port is being built on the 749ha site of the former Shell Haven oil refinery in Thurrock.

Upon completion, it will operate as a deep sea capacity container port, creating 12,000 jobs.

London Gateway's chief executive, Simon Moore, said: "This contract is a major milestone in constructing the port. In an economic climate where the building industry is experiencing a sharp slowdown, this is great news for Essex and the UK."

The Government designated the port as a harbour authority in May.

Construction work is expected to begin on site later this year.
