GCSE results for poor kids "are post code lottery"

Lynda Breakwell, Regen.net, 20 August 2008

Children from the poorest homes fare better at school in London than in other parts of England, according to new research.

More than 44 per cent of London's disadvantaged children achieved five GCSEs at grades C to A*, the figures, published by campaign group End Child Poverty's (ECP) show.

Overall, England's most deprived areas fewer than one in four UK children receiving free meals achieved five GCSEs at grade C or above, the report says.

ECP puts London's strong results down to injections of public money that schools in the capital's poorest areas receive to improve standards.

The London Challenge initiative gives £40 million a year to deprived areas in the capital.

Nottinghamshire's deprived children get the lowest grades, according to the report. Just under 22 per cent of those receiving free school dinners got five good GCSEs.
