NEET figures plummet

Twenty thousand more young people were in education, employment or training at the end of 2007 than in 2006, figures from the Department of Children, Schools and Families show.

The proportion of 16 to 18 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) has fallen for the second year running to 9.4 per cent. This is equivalent to a fall of one percent - the largest percentage point fall since 1999, according to the DCSF.

But the figure is still higher than the 8.9 per cent level in 1997 when Labour came to power.

Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, said: "It is really encouraging news that the number of young people who are not in employment, education or training has fallen again. By 2015 all young people will stay in education or training until they are at least 18."
