Local firms call for Greater Manchester mayor

Ben Walker, Regeneration & Renewal, 9 May 2008

The boss of a lobby group representing hundreds of Greater Manchester's businesses has urged the Government to create a city-regional mayor to lead the area's economic development.

Daniel Mouawad, chief executive of Pro Manchester, which represents 250 firms from across the city-region, made the call after last week's local elections.

Greater Manchester is bidding for money from the Government's Transport Innovation Fund (Tif), which is needed to fund a tram expansion in the city but is predicated on a controversial congestion charge. Mouawad fears that Greater Manchester's existing board of council leaders may not be robust enough to push the deal through.

"Manchester is about to enter a very challenging period with the Tif bid," Mouawad said. "Its federal governance structure is to be put to its ultimate test. I fear it is going to become increasingly apparent that without a directly-elected mayor commanding sound public and private sector support, Manchester will be unable to realise its economic potential."
