Wirral Council pulls out of Birkenhead project

Colin Marrs, Regen.net, 30 July 2010

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council has pulled out of a development agreement for a regeneration scheme in Birkenhead.

The council has pulled the plug on an agreement with Europa Plaza Developments to create a casino, hotel and office blocks on Europa Boulevard.

The decision was made during a confidential session of a council cabinet meeting, due to concerns over the scheme’s viability.

A council spokeswoman said: "This decision follows an extensive and detailed due diligence exercise that cannot be shared publicly for legal reasons.

"The council is absolutely committed to the regeneration of Birkenhead, however, this decision was made to ensure the interests of local people were served."

In January, the cabinet overruled a recommendation by council officers to seek another developer for the scheme, giving the developer more time to come up with funding.

However, yesterday’s agreement authorised the council’s director of law, HR & asset management to terminate it.
