Low-heating city flats for key workers

5 January 2007

The St Matthew's Key Worker Development provides 12 one- and two-bedroom flats for key workers in Lambeth, south London, with plans to later upgrade it to require no heating. Even prior to the upgrade, householders' energy bills are expected to be less than £75 a year, according to PRP, one of the two architecture practices involved in the scheme. The development meets the higher environmental standards that will be imposed on all new homes in 2010 as part of a tightening of the Government's building regulations. The scheme has also been designed so that, when the cost of the necessary components falls, it can be upgraded to ensure its net energy requirements and carbon emissions are zero. The development is the first built project from PRP Zedfactor, a collaboration between PRP and Bill Dunster Architects. Ziba Adrangi, associate director of PRP and St Matthew's development project leader, answers our panel's questions.
