Birmingham City Council to assess two proposals

Birmingham City Council is to assess two proposals for the UK's only super casino to be based in the city, ahead of the unveiling of official selection criteria later this month. The local authority says that it would welcome a regional casino and the associated regeneration benefits it would bring. It will review bids by the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham City Football Club before they are refined in light of the assessment criteria. The government's Casino Advisory Panel is expected to publish the list of criteria at the end of the month.

The latest phase of the regeneration of Sheffield city centre is moving forward after plans for a multi-storey car park, office block and casino were approved. The St Paul's Place scheme is the commercial element of the £130 million Heart of the City development that also includes the Winter Garden, Peace Gardens and Millennium Galleries. It will create a 520-space car park, 18,580m2 of office space, bars, restaurants and shops. The scheme is backed by developer CTP St James with construction work due to begin in the spring.
