A vision for "a strong and sustainable economy" for the Thames Gateway South Essex (TGSE) region was launched this week. Gearing Up for Growth, published by the East of England Development Agency, was launched at this week's Thames Gateway Forum. It identifies economic development issues and schemes that will progress in the TGSE area over the next 15 years.
Development of key sites launched by Gloucester City Council

Two consultations on the development of key sites over the next 15 years have been launched by Gloucester City Council. Sites earmarked for work in the central area action plan include King's Square, the docks and the Railway Triangle. A second consultation relates to policies and proposals for areas outside the city including transport, open space and nature conservation. Residents have until 12 December to comment. Both papers can be viewed via www.PlanningResource.co.uk.

Buro Happold chosen

Buro Happold has been chosen to design the proposed environmentally friendly City of Belfast Stadium in the Ormeau Park area of the city. The design is based on sustainable and alternative technologies, including the use of combined heat and power systems, rainwater recycling, daylighting techniques and solar collectors to generate domestic hot water. The stadium will cater for football, rugby, greyhound racing, swimming and a range of Olympic sports. It will also be used as a concert venue.

Meabhann Crowe has joined Halliday Fraser Munro as a trainee planner in the consultancy's Edinburgh office. Graeme Kerr has also joined the firm as a consultant planner. He previously worked for Glasgow City Council and South Ayrshire Council.
Plans to revive a former industrial site in Lancaster

Plans to revive a former industrial site in Lancaster are moving forward with the selection of a lead developer and an agreement to move a gasholder from the 6.5ha site. Lancaster City Council has contracted CTP and Development Securities for its Luneside East scheme, which includes offices, workshops, open space and 350 homes. The council has begun compulsory purchase proceedings to obtain the site.
Designs for a park in Gloucester

Designs for a park in Gloucester have won support from local residents. Around £100,000 is to be spent creating open space on abandoned farmland in the city. The Horsbere Meadow scheme includes creating a pathway using bricks with designs by local school children carved into them. It will aim to preserve the ridge and furrow medieval field system as well as wildlife.
BID in Reading wins support of local businesses

Plans for a business improvement district (BID) in Reading have won the support of local businesses. A four-month interim project will now be launched to prepare the necessary contracts, form a BID committee and collect the levy needed to deliver a business plan from April 2006 onwards. Reading's city centre management board is incorporating to become a community interest company and will delegate the running of the BID to a committee of its directors.
