Innovations - Refugees volunteer to boost their skills

The Regional Integration Initiative aims to encourage refugees and asylum-seekers to become involved in training and volunteering, helping them to integrate and contribute to the community, as well as trying to tackle prejudices. The scheme is designed to boost migrants' skills and ease their transition into paid work. It is organised by the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Consortium for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees, a Home Office-funded partnership. Ivelina Metchkarova-Taylor, a development worker at the consortium, answers our panel's questions.
Appointment at Advantage West Midlands

Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands has named Stuart Kirkwood as its director of special projects. Kirkwood, a chartered surveyor, has worked in the Midlands property sector for 20 years. In his new post, he will lead a team of development and assets specialists who are responsible for the disposal of 445ha of brown-field land.
Sheffield tentants transfer

Tenants on a Sheffield housing estate have voted to transfer their homes from the city council to housing association Sanctuary Housing. The 86 per cent 'yes' vote should kick-start a five-year programme of extensive improvements to the Shiregreen estate, the council said.
Kinetic AIU masterplan

Waterside regeneration company Isis and Birmingham City Council have appointed architect Kinetic AIU to produce a masterplan for the regeneration of Birmingham's Warwick Bar. Proposals for the area include a film centre and auditorium, an art gallery, a hotel, up to 600 homes, business space, cafes, bars and restaurants.
