Plans for Lace Market, Nottingham

Nottingham City Council has resolved to grant planning permission for a commercial development in the city's Lace Market. The Pod will house up to three levels of large retail units and will include hotel and leisure space. Designed by architects Benson and Forsyth, which has worked on projects such as the millennium wing of the National Gallery of Ireland and the Museum of Scotland, the scheme will be constructed by Bildurn Properties. It is expected to create 100 jobs.
Death of Mike Saywood

Mike Saywood, former director of planning and highways at Rutland County Council, died last month. Since leaving Rutland in 1997, Saywood was an integral part of Local Government Services (LGS), which organises planners to cover temporary shortages in council planning departments. He also had spells at Essex County Council and the London Borough of Barnet. David Loveday, Saywood's colleague at LGS, said that the present character of Rutland is "primarily shaped by a small loyal band of planners led by Mike". He added that Saywood was "one of the most respected planners in the region".

Luxury cinema for Derby's Eagle Centre

The regeneration of Derby's Eagle Centre has moved forward with National Amusements agreeing to open a luxury cinema on the site. The chain has proposed a £20 million, 6,500m2 cinema with 12 screens, a restaurant and a concierge service. A planning application for the Cinema de Lux will be submitted next month. A judicial review of plans to expand a shopping centre 12km outside Belfast is to be sought by the city council and the local chamber of commerce.
Former post office in Sunderland reopened as flats

A grade II listed former post office in Sunderland has been reopened as 32 one and two-bedroomed flats. Part of the Sunderland Housing Group's £42 million regeneration of the Sunniside district, the scheme is designed to draw people back to city centre living. The £5 million development was a joint venture between English Partnerships and the housing group. The city council contributed £1 million.
