City academy results outstrip national average
17 June 2005
The survey, by accountants PriceWaterhouseCoopers, evaluated the 11 academies open by spring 2004, and has found that key stage 3 improvement in the schools outstrips the national average, with absenteeism "significantly down" in the three original academies. Overall, GCSE results are "mixed", with six academies showing improved GCSE performance, while five have not. However, the survey stresses that more time is needed for a true assessment. The overall findings will come as a boost to the Government's plans to have opened 200 academies by 2010, at a cost of £5 billion. Schools minister Jacqui Smith said: "The evaluation shows that we are on the right track." - Academies Evaluation Second Annual Report can be viewed via www.regen.net/doc.
