Brighton and Hove's planning sub-committee turned down Beetham Organization's proposal for a 6.5ha site next to the station last week. Although the development would have provided around 170 homes and a public square, the planning officer's report said that the site had not been identified in policy as suitable for a tall building.

Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands is to provide Eccleshall Biomass Ltd with £935,000 towards building the bio-energy plant at the Raleigh Hall Industrial Estate in Eccleshall. The 2MW generator, run on miscanthus or elephant grass, is expected to provide enough electricity for around 2,000 homes.

Responsibility for preparing the capital's housing strategy will transfer to the Greater London Authority, the government confirmed last week. The joint Treasury and ODPM move follows consultation on merging regional housing and planning boards to encourage areas to take a strategic view of housing demand and to advise the government on investment. London mayor Ken Livingston said that the move will improve co-ordination between planning, transport and economic development.

A demolished school in Salford, dubbed the UK's "worst wasted space", is central to a £500 million regeneration plan. Ascension Road forms part of a ten-year plan for 3,500 homes and improved transport and community facilities. The Lower Broughton Partnership, which includes Salford City Council and Countryside Properties, will submit an application shortly. The site gained its title after a nationwide search organised by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.
