The total number of second homes in England stands at just under 300,000, according to latest research. The statistics, compiled by consultancy Savills, finds that while the South West accounts for just under a quarter of all second homes, London has the second largest proportion at 19.3 per cent. The researchers say that the market is made up of properties bought for weekend or longer breaks and pieds-a-terre used by commuters or those looking for a city base.

City academy to be developed in Greater Manchester

A city academy specialising in business and enterprise in sport is to be developed in Greater Manchester after Salford City Council approved plans last week. Salford City Academy will open on the site of Canon Williamson School at Peel Green near Eccles in September and will initially accommodate 750 pupils. Construction of an academy building will begin in 2007. Turley Associates acted as consultant on the project, which has been designed by Aedas Architects for United Learning Trust.

A strategy seeking to harness the tourism potential of north London was launched last week. The strategy, drawn up by the London Development Agency and marketing body North London Ltd, includes Alexandra Palace, the RAF Museum in Hendon, the Lea Valley Regional Park and the range of languages and cultures across the London boroughs of Haringey, Waltham Forest, Barnet and Enfield. Research will be carried out into better targeting of marketing campaigns to attract more visitors to north London.

Businesses in Bristol city centre given chance to vote

Businesses in Bristol city centre are to be given the chance to vote on whether a business improvement district (BID) should be established in the area. The BID is proposed in Broadmead, the city's main shopping area. The vote will take place in June. If approved, the BID, promoted by the Broadmead Board, will require all businesses to contribute 1.5 per cent of their rateable value over three years to help maintain and improve the area's environment. Meanwhile, work is due to start shortly on the Broadmead expansion, which will be completed in 2008.

Major development in the forecourt of Victoria station

A major development in the forecourt of London's Victoria station was granted planning permission by Westminster City Council last week. The mixed-use scheme, by the Co-operative Insurance Society, will replace two buildings between Vauxhall Bridge Road and Wilton Road. It will comprise 9,820m2 of offices and 1,640m2 of shops. The proposal, designed by Sheppard Robson, chimes with the Victoria Station area brief and has also been approved by London mayor Ken Livingstone.
