Bristol City Council is to secure compulsory purchase orders and a development partner to remove two eyesores from the city centre, it announced this week. Repeated attempts to redevelop the 19th century Seaman's Chapel at Prince Street and an empty plot at Narrow Quay, both owned by Samuel Smiths Old Brewery, have failed. The council has also received a planning application from architects Atkins Walters Webster to expand Jesters, Bristol's longest-running comedy club.

Joanna Averley has been appointed deputy chief executive of government adviser the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. A town planner, she will oversee Cabe's advisory services relating to buildings, masterplans, parks and squares and continue to act as director of Cabe's Enabling Programme which provides technical advice to clients during the early stages of projects. Before joining Cabe in 2000, she worked in the private sector on regeneration projects and masterplans such as Manchester City Centre.
