Great Yarmouth harbour plans boosted

Plans to regenerate Great Yarmouth's outer harbour were boosted by the approval of £8.75 million of funding last week. The DTI gave the go-ahead for the East of England Development Agency to invest in the scheme to re-equip the harbour. The Eastport project aims to create 1,000 jobs and attract 120,000 extra visitors to the region.
Landfill applications will be approved

Planning applications for three regional landfills will be approved to meet the "urgent need" for waste disposal facilities in the Belfast area and the eastern part of Northern Ireland, environment minister Angela Smith declared last week. The sites are at Cottonmount in Newtownabbey and quarries at Mullaghglass in the Belfast Hills and Aughrim near Lisburn.
Bristol Waterside Arena selected

Bristol Waterside Arena Ltd has been selected by the South West of England Regional Development Agency as its preferred partner to build and run the Bristol Arena venue. The firm is a consortium of four companies including Orion Land and Leisure Ltd, SMG (Europe) Ltd, Bellway PLC and Sir Robert McAlpine. The consortium will work with the agency and Bristol City Council to develop the 10,000-seat indoor arena next to Temple Meads station for concerts, sports, conferences and events.

Cost and feasibility advice for redeveloping Nottingham railway station is to be carried out by Gleeds for Nottingham City Council. The project aims to create a transport hub to link up with the city's tram system and includes platform and station refurbishments with building costs of £20 million. A further £70 million of work will take place on other areas including car parks, office space and residential areas. The project is expected to be completed in 2010.

This is lottery money well spent. Contrast it with Doncaster's soon-to-close Earth Centre, where fun takes second place to a worthy message.
