Swansea city centre saw significant investment and development in commercial, leisure and housing schemes last year, according to the city's latest health check. The document, published by Swansea City Centre Partnership (SCCP), says the amount of vacant floor space in Wales's second city decreased by 15 per cent. Members of the East of England Regional Assembly last week welcomed indications that the area will receive a 50 per cent increase in funding for affordable housing. The assembly was considering a letter from regional development minister Lord Rooker sent following the suspension of its support for the East of England Plan before Christmas (Planning, 17 December 2004, p3). Members also heard that 26,201 responses have been received during the consultation on the plan.

Five tenders for infrastructure works at the Morlands Enterprise Park at Glastonbury in Somerset have been submitted to the South West England Regional Development Agency. A preferred bidder will be chosen next month and talks will be held to determine a timetable for the infrastructure, which includes site remediation, road building and work on a mill stream and bridge. It is hoped that work will start on the 12.5ha former tannery site in the summer.
