Ecotec Research and Consulting wins contract

A contract to assess the success of the nine housing market renewal pathfinder projects has been won by Ecotec Research and Consulting. The ODPM has commissioned Ecotec to lead a consortium comprising the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the University of Birmingham, the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research at Sheffield Hallam University, the Centre for Sustainable Urban and Regional Futures at the University of Salford and consultancy PPS TerrQuest Plc.

LDA Design awarded deal for Eastside regeneration

The deal to masterplan a £250 million Learning and Leisure Quarter and Technology Park, part of the £6 billion Eastside regeneration in Birmingham, has been awarded to masterplanner LDA Design. Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands appointed LDA, following expressions of interest from more than 40 firms.

Appointment at Ecotec

Professor Philip Leather has been appointed as consultancy Ecotec's new director specialising in housing and urban renewal. He is currently professor of housing and urban renewal and director of the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (Curs) at the University of Birmingham. Since 1995, Leather has been an adviser to social policy research charity the Joseph Rowntree Foundation on private sector housing conditions. In 2004, he was specialist adviser to the ODPM on the Beacon Councils Initiative housing renewal theme.

Appointment at Irwell Valley Housing Association

Neil Baumber has joined Irwell Valley Housing Association (IVHA) as assistant chief executive for regeneration and development. He was previously at Dane Housing Association, where he was director of business development. One of Baumber's first tasks will be to oversee the transfer of 1,000 homes in Haughton Green, near Stockport, from Manchester City Council to IVHA.

Tax on chewing gum needed says summit

A tax on chewing gum is needed to help meet the millions spent annually cleaning it off the streets, a summit on the problem agreed this week. A resolution issued at the end of the summit between representatives of the cities of Edinburgh, London, Belfast, Cardiff and Dublin called for a levy to be charged on sales of gum to create a central fund for clean-up costs.
