Latest government draft guidance on minerals is timid and poorly linked to core planning and sustainability objectives, the South East England Regional Assembly's regional planning committee claimed this week. The committee, giving its response to draft MPS1, complained that it fails to emphasise the need for a step change in attitudes towards the use of mineral reserves. "We want to see a clear national strategy with greater emphasis on recycling," said committee chairman Keith Mitchell.

Sunderland Asda centre could create jobs

More than 700 jobs could be created in Sunderland under plans by retailer Asda to build a £40 million distribution centre in the city. The move adds to the creation of 200 jobs announced by car manufacturer Nissan at its Washington Sunderland plant this month. Asda's proposals aim to complement two depots based in Washington. A planning application for the latest depot, which would cover around 35,300m2, has been submitted to the city council.

Former Edinburgh post office in use

Edinburgh's former general post office has been brought back into use as offices after lying derelict for 15 years. The £100 million office development in the city's historic New Town opened last week, providing 19,800m2 of office space on eight floors. Waverley Gate, designed by the Hugh Martin Partnership, fuses the original category B listed facades of the post office, which opened more than 135 years ago, with a modern office design. The Castlemore Securities scheme also includes 2,300m2 of rooftop gardens.

Wolverhampton residents give revamp opinion

Wolverhampton residents and traders are being asked for their opinion of plans for a £4 million revamp of the city centre. The makeover, proposed by the city council, would improve the main shopping streets and pedestrian areas to create a more spacious environment with high-quality paving, lighting and street furniture. Bilston Street, Dudley Street, King Street, Queen Square, Queen Street and Woolpack Street will be the main areas covered by the scheme. Work is due to start later this year and expected to be completed by 2007. Comments can be made until 4 March.
