Transformation of Telford housing estate

The first step in transforming a housing estate in Telford, Shropshire, is on track after funding for a community centre was approved by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands last week. The £4.4 million project is the centrepiece of a £60 million revamp of the Woodside estate. It will replace an outdated community centre with training and education facilities, community space, a creche, cafe, chemist and NHS dental surgery.
Plans to be demolished Westgate House

Plans to demolish Westgate House, voted one of the UK's ugliest buildings, were submitted to Newcastle City Council last week. Westgate Road Newcastle Ltd proposes to replace the derelict 1960s office block in Grainger Town with 94 flats, shops and leisure space. Regional director Neil Adamson said that the £15 million scheme would create something more harmonious. The council is due to consider the plans in April.

A tall building policy was set to be adopted by Bristol City Council as Planning went to press this week. The supplementary planning document has been compiled in response to the growth of the city's regeneration programme. Consultation on the draft document (Planning, 4 June 2004, p4) revealed support for tall buildings in the city, as long as they are well designed, sustainable, distinctive and located to fit into the urban landscape. The guidance will set criteria by which future proposals should be assessed.
