Government officials due to meet leading academics

Senior government officials were due to meet leading academics to plot the way forward for city regional policy as Regeneration & Renewal went to press. The embryonic plan will see cities and their hinterlands developed as focuses for government policy and spending. Urban policy unit chief David Lunts will meet planning academic Sir Peter Hall and delegates from Salford University and the London School of Economics. Both institutions are researching city regions.

An urban development corporation (UDC) has been established in West Northamptonshire, following approval in the House of Commons last month. Regeneration minister Jeff Rooker said the UDC was the most effective vehicle to regenerate the area, and that the new body would play a key role in delivering the communities plan in the region. The UDC will become operational early this year.
South-East planners call for Crossrail extension

Southampton City Council aims to host regional casino

Southampton City Council aims to become one of the eight cities to host a regional casino, believing that a casino-led development could underpin a city centre renaissance. Developer Ameristar has unveiled plans for the West Quay comprising a 6,000 sq metre casino and hotel, with conference facilities and entertainment venues. The council believes the casino would create 1,000 jobs and help the city become the south coast's leisure capital.
Hot spring will heat Durham eco-village

The 4,000 homes planned for an eco-village in County Durham will be heated using geothermal energy, following the discovery of hot water 1,000 metres below the ground.
