The ODPM has launched a consultation on the regional split of the £5.5 billion allocated through Regional Housing Pots for the period 2006-07 and 2007-08. The east of England will get an increase of 50 per cent, reflecting the planned development in the growth areas and the housing pressures facing the South-East. The affordability problems in the South-West will be tackled with an increase of 40 per cent. In a separate announcement, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said its five year plan would focus on affordable housing in rural areas.

More than 4,000 civil service posts will be moved to the regions by the end of 2004-2005. The Department of Work and Pensions is most affected with 2,300 posts set to switch to Liverpool, Newcastle and other locations. More than 1,200 Ministry of Defence posts are also being moved to north Yorkshire. It is part of the plan to relocate a total of 20,000 jobs to the regions by 2010 in line with the recommendations of the Lyons Review.
