A ministerial visit marked the completion of £14 million worth of rail improvements in the West Country this week. The doubling of a previously single-track section of the Great Western Main Line between Truro and St Austell in Cornwall aims to improve train punctuality, allow for growth in services and boost the region's economy. Transport minister Tony McNulty was joined by senior representatives from the rail industry and local government on a special steam train service from Plymouth to Truro to mark the completion.

Brownfield land project endorsed

A £200 million regeneration project to develop 25ha of brownfield land in Gloucester was endorsed last week. Despite Gloucester City Council's decision to approve the Gloucester Quays scheme, it will be referred to the Government Office for the South West to decide whether to call it in. The scheme would provide a new campus for the city's college of further education, a factory outlet centre, 1,000 canalside flats, an 80-bedroom hotel, shops and offices.
Park Hill regeneration moves closer

The regeneration of Park Hill in Sheffield, Britain's largest grade II listed building, moved a step closer last week when Sheffield City Council and English Partnerships named Urban Splash as their preferred development partner. The building will be converted into a mixed-use sustainable development that will include owner-occupied housing and social rented properties. Manchester Methodist Housing Group will manage the scheme.
Chinatown regeneration could destroy character

Regeneration plans for London's Chinatown could destroy the area's unique character, campaigners have warned. Community group Min Quan fears that plans to redevelop a key building in Soho would lead to increased rents that local firms would be unable to afford. Developer Rosewheel has served notice on tenants of the Sandringham building, close to the area's landmark pagoda. Westminster City Council says that it has not received a planning application from Rosewheel.
Clydeside project given go-ahead

A £200 million regeneration project for a rundown Clydeside neighbourhood has been given the go-ahead last week. Glasgow City Council voted unanimously to grant planning permission for the first phase of the scheme, which will provide 1,250 homes and community and leisure facilities. Housing blocks ranging from two to six storeys will be modelled on homes built as part of the renowned Crown Street regeneration project in the nearby Gorbals area.
Anderson rejoins Liverpool Vision

Joe Anderson, leader of Liverpool City Council's Labour group, has rejoined the board of Liverpool Vision after he resigned in July over the collapse of the Fourth Grace development. The urban regeneration company has also expanded its team, headed up by Sir Joe Dwyer, with three appointments - entrepreneur Matt Johnson, Trinity Mirror North West managing director Sara Wilde and Liverpool Riverside Labour MP Louise Ellman.
