Massive Las Vegas-style casinos could be developed under proposals to modernise UK gambling law unveiled by the government this week. The gambling bill would relax some restrictions including the rule that defines strict areas where casinos can be built. If parliament approves the legislation, it would allow 24-hour casinos with up to 1,250 slot machines offering unlimited jackpots. But it would also entail the removal of such machines from takeaway outlets and minicab offices.

Britain's tallest residential skyscraper could be built in Salford if plans for a 201m-high tower are approved. The building, proposed on a car park opposite Salford Cathedral, would house 1,000 flats and would feature a wind turbine on its summit. Developer BSC Group is applying for support from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment before submitting a planning application to Salford City Council.

A masterplan to regenerate the Royal Avenue and Cathedral Quarter area of Belfast city centre is being drawn up. The plan, to be completed by December, will address the range, mix and location of uses to maximise the retail-led regeneration area near Belfast Cathedral. Following the masterplan, the Northern Ireland executive will prepare a development brief to provide more detailed guidance on the type of regeneration scheme that it would support.
