Evesham, Uttoxeter and Spalding have been selected as beacon towns from more than 235 candidates in the Countryside Agency's market towns initiative. Each town will demonstrate how best to tackle a particular issue. For example, Uttoxeter will work with partners to produce an integrated transport plan for the town and surrounding area. There will be a total of 18 beacon towns in England to share best practice and influence policy at regional, national and European levels.

The document, published by the South West Regional Assembly, claims that objectives such as providing housing to meet needs while prioritising people's ability to access jobs and services require an integrated approach across all policy areas. In brief: Three regional development agencies to deliver proposals

The three northern regional development agencies are set to deliver their proposals on how best to implement deputy prime minister John Prescott's Northern Way programme next month. A task group has set its recommendations for how each region can help deliver the strategy, which will include demolition programmes. One North East, Yorkshire Forward and the North West Development Agency worked together on the report, which will be presented to the ODPM in September.

Regeneration News: Development team answer questions

The development team from Chetwood Associates, the architects behind a proposed masterplan for St Austell town centre, answered questions from the public at a consultation on their plans last week. Around 500 people viewed the latest designs as part of the consultation process. The regeneration scheme is a partnership between the South West of England Regional Development Agency, Restormel Borough Council and David McLean Developments. A planning application is likely to be submitted to the borough council next month.

Regeneration News: Developer sought to regenerate site

A developer is being sought to regenerate a 1.2ha site on Blyth Quayside in Northumberland owned by regional development agency One North East. The agency wants to develop a mixed-use scheme, but it must meet sustainable building criteria. The quayside, which has seen £20 million of investment, is home to the New and Renewable Energy Centre. The deadline for expressions of interest is 21 September.
