England's nine regional development agencies exceeded all targets set by the government in the financial year 2003-04, according to latest figures. The bodies aimed to help create just under 60,000 jobs and achieved nearly 90,000. A target of 4,000 new businesses was beaten at 6,000 and 1,200ha of brownfield land was cleaned up or reused ahead of a goal of just over 1,000ha. Around £677 million was invested in deprived areas against a target of £571 million.

Leicester Regeneration Company is seeking a development partner for its first redevelopment opportunity at the city's Charles Street Police Station. The site was bought on the company's behalf by the East Midlands Development Agency and is expected to yield more than 9,000 sq m of office space and capacity for around 600 jobs. The scheme also includes 24 flats and restaurant accommodation.

The Capita Group has been chosen to set up a joint venture company to provide highways maintenance, design and landscaping in Salford. Capita estimates that the service contract will generate around £250 million over its initial 12-year run. Salford City Council has also chosen two construction companies for new build and refurbishment work. G&J Seddon and Cruden Construction will work on five years' worth of projects, including a £4 million sports village, a primary school and housing refurbishment.

International cruise ships could become a more common sight in London following the launch of a floating terminal. The facility will accommodate ships up to 240m long at Greenwich and Tower Bridge. Up to 1,000 passengers will be able to sail into the heart of the city and disembark at the terminal, which is owned by the Port of London Authority. It is modelled on an airport layout and includes security screening and on-board immigration and customs controls.

Scottish News: Leith housing rejected over design flaws

Inquiry reporters have backed Edinburgh City Council's decision to reject a housing development on design grounds. A public inquiry took place last March after developer George Wimpey appealed against three refusals of plans for 355 flats at a disused bus depot on Leith Walk. Councillors had ruled that the scheme failed to meet sufficiently high design standards.

House builder Redrow has set up a regional housing company in Exeter to cover south Somerset, Devon and north Cornwall. Redrow Homes (West Country) will build on the reputation established by the Bristol-based South West branch, which will now concentrate efforts in Bristol, north Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Managing director Colin Smethurst will lead the new company, which is expected to employ more than 30 people within 12 months.
