The nation's trade unions have found stability after haemorrhaging members during the 1990s. New figures, released this week by the Office of National Statistics, show that 7.4 million workers belonged to a trade union in autumn 2003. Among employees, 29.1 per cent belonged to a union in 2003, up 0.1 per cent since last year, but down from almost 40 per cent in 1992. The ONS also found that there were large regional differences in union membership - only 21 per cent of London employees were part of a union, compared with 39 per cent in Northern Ireland.
