Xsite Architecture awarded contract

Xsite Architecture has been awarded the contract to complete the design and then build the office building that will form the heart of the Middlesbrough Council-backed Digital City development. The Digital Enterprise Centre, which was designed by Xsite, was recently awarded planning permission.
Appointment at Leicester Community Action Network

Leicester Community Action Network, a project aimed at boosting social enterprise activity in the city, has selected Ben Humphris as chief executive officer. Humphris was previously project champion of CAN's Fast Forward youth enterprise initiative. He replaces outgoing director Dave Ahlquist.
Hull Council cabinet vote

Hull City Council cabinet voted to make arrangements to create a city development company this week. Property and land assets could be transferred to Hull Forward, although the company will probably operate as an asset-backed vehicle with its partners funding the purchase of assets. It will have a staff of eight, cost around £2.6 million to establish and is expected to lever in £500 million of private sector investment over the next 15 years.
King Alfred scheme approved

The £290 million King Alfred scheme designed by Frank Gehry was approved by Brighton and Hove City Council last week. The project will include 750 flats and a £48 million council sports centre designed jointly with HOK. The development, which features two glass and metal towers, should be complete by 2013.
Essex gears up for conservation centre

An application for a £5 million education and nature conservation complex in south Essex will be submitted next month. Plans include a £2.7 million renewably powered heritage centre and a regional base for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The 50ha park in Pitsea, owned by Basildon District Council, could attract around 350,000 visitors a year. The Heritage Lottery Fund and the East of England Development Agency are helping to fund the project.
UK Supreme Court

Middlesex Guildhall is set to become the UK's Supreme Court after Save Britain's Heritage lost its fight against the change of the building's use. The watchdog asked the High Court to block Westminster City Council's decision of last November, which granted planning permission and listed building consent for a change of use, arguing that it could lead to the loss of Guildhall's gothic interior. But the High Court ruled that planning rules had not been infringed.
