Matthew Girt is to become urban regeneration consultant to the Diocese of London, with a remit to integrate the Anglican Church's work with other urban regeneration plans across the city. He was previously director of regeneration for the Diocese of Rochester.

Sir Michael Lyons and Sir William Wells have been named non-executive directors of public policy consultancy SQW Group. Lyons was previously chief executive of Birmingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Wolverhampton Borough Council. He is currently chairman of the English Cities Fund. Wells is chairman of the NHS Appointments Commission and the Health Service Commercial Advisory Board.

A centre to help the North-East win international ship design contracts is set to be built after the region's development agency last week awarded it £1.5 million. One North-East said Newcastle's International Marine Design Centre will offer a first port of call for clients looking to recruit designers.

Victoria Baths restoration

The second phase of the restoration of the Victoria Baths in Manchester will be developed by Artisan Ship Canal Developments. The project made headlines when it won £3.38 million towards refurbishment on BBC2's Restoration programme. Manchester City Council said it will oversee the scheme to make sure that sustainability and regeneration targets are reached.

Historic investigation

An archaeological investigation of five key historic areas around Gloucester is to be carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology Service. The results of the survey will identify significant historical features and ensure the city's heritage is maintained, the Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company said.

Appointment at Leicester Regeneration Company

Leicester Regeneration Company has appointed Alan Swales MBE (left) and James Sinclair as consultants. Swales, previously chief executive of urban regeneration company Nottingham Regeneration, will work on the city's New Business Quarter project; while chartered surveyor Sinclair will advise on the firm's renewal programme.

Birmingham plans

Plans to diversify Birmingham's local economy and increase its population by ten per cent feature in a prospectus setting out priorities for the city over the next 20 years. The plans will go before the council for final approval next week.
