City takes exception to Google snub

8 December 2006

Liverpudlians are up in arms about a perceived snub by Google Earth, the website that allows users to view close-up satellite images of any location on the planet Liverpool Vision insists that pictures of the city are more than five years old, despite the site's claims that images are updated every three years. Liverpool Vision planning director Jenny Douglas says: "Google Earth images show roofing work still under way at Lime Street station. This took place between 2000 and 2001." The urban regeneration company wants the site updated to show the transformation of Liverpool's waterfront and city centre. "Google Earth is influential in shaping opinions about places for a worldwide audience," adds Douglas.

Innovations - Support that helps parents and children

8 December 2006

The Families Learning for Employment Programme (Flep) in Wythenshawe, Manchester, is a pilot project from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). In the past year, Flep has worked with 50 families, helping 22 parents find work and another 16 enter further or higher education. In return, parents agreed to become more involved in their children's education in order to improve their behaviour and results. Manchester City Council plans to expand the Flep project across the city next year, and the DWP is considering rolling the scheme out nationally. The pilot received £101,000 from the European Regional Development Fund and Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. Bob Paprosky, headteacher of a local special needs school, was seconded to run the project when it started in March 2005. He answers our panel's questions.

New renewal tools must balance growth policies

8 December 2006

Democratic control over development decisions is essential, but we are yet to find a way of enshrining it in a planning system without creating an inbuilt bias against building. As Treasury economist Kate Barker's review of the planning system says this week, the costs of development are all too often "local, short-term and highly visible, while the benefits may be regional, long-term and less apparent". Not surprising, then, that the local councillors who make planning decisions often find it more politic to oppose rather than support new build.
