A bid for a large casino has been submitted by Leicester City Council as part of a scheme that it said could create 400 jobs. The plans envisage an entertainment complex incorporating a hotel, bars and restaurants. The scheme could generate up to £160 million of private investment for a neglected part of the city centre, according to the authority.

Appointment at Advantage West Midlands

Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands has appointed Richard Hyde as deputy chairman. Hyde, who has been a board member of the RDA since 2002, replaces Norman Price who leaves the organisation next month.

Housing deal signed

The first deal in England designed to make sure that a council works closely with social housing agency the Housing Corporation to deliver affordable homes was signed this week. Derby City Council has been piloting the housing protocol agreement since June and has developed an action plan to try to ensure the quality of housing, the Corporation said.

EDAW has been chosen as masterplanner for the Newcastle Science City project. The consultancy will design research and business facilities alongside residential, retail and leisure amenities for a brewery site in the city centre. The project aims to create 250 science businesses and 20,000 science-based jobs by 2015. Building work is expected to start late next year.
