ESG appoints Urban Initiatives

Regeneration company ESG Herefordshire has appointed design practice Urban Initiatives to prepare a masterplan for a 40ha site north of Hereford city centre. The masterplan for the Edgar Street Grid site will aim to integrate it with the city centre, improve access to the railway station and create an 850-home community. It will also explore how the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal can be restored.
Appointment at Yorkshir Forward

Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward has selected Jonathan Metcalfe, Professor Michael Arthur and John Weighell to its board. The appointees will take up their three-year posts on 14 December, replacing John Spencer, Professor Bob Boucher and Aidan Rave, all of whom are leaving the board.
Appointment at New East Manchester

Peter Skates has been hired as development director for urban regeneration company New East Manchester. Skates spent 14 years at Manchester City Council, where he was lead officer on projects such as Central Park, Shudehill Transport Interchange and Piccadilly Place.
Plans for retirement village lodged in Birmingham

Plans have been lodged for a £37 million retirement village in Birmingham. New Oscott is one of four planned in the city that could provide around 700 homes through a £100 million scheme. Birmingham City Council, the ExtraCare Charitable Trust and Focus Futures have submitted the New Oscott scheme for planning approval. The village could feature around 260 apartments and leisure facilities including a fitness and well-being centre, a restaurant and a village hall. Properties will be available for people aged 60 and above.
Taylor Young to produce feasibility study

Taylor Young is to produce a feasibility study on options for creating a community hub as part of neighbourhood centre improvements in Paston, Cambridgeshire. The firm has been commissioned by Peterborough City Council for the project, which aims to bring together a community resource facility, health centre, housing, offices, adventure play area and shops.

The Kings Waterfront development in Liverpool city centre has been recognised as a model of sustainability after winning the national Green Apple environmental award last week. The prize recognises the sustainability standards that the project achieved when infrastructure works were being completed. When finished, the project will include a 10,000-seat arena, 1,800 homes and leisure and retail space.
Tower blocks in Birchfield could become apartments

Three tower blocks on the Birchfield estate in Birmingham could be transformed into apartments under proposals outlined by the city council. The local authority suggested that a feasibility study should be carried out with a developer into the disposal, conversion and refurbishment of Tweed, Calder and Birchfield Towers and nearby maisonettes. A range of tenures could then be introduced. Birchfield lies in the Birmingham Sandwell housing market renewal area and the council hopes that the move will act as a catalyst for further regeneration.
Plans submitted to restore International Garden Festival site

Proposals to restore Liverpool's former International Garden Festival site as a public park were submitted to the city council this week. The £250 million scheme for the 35ha site is planned by Langtree Group with David McLean Developments. It aims to revive the Oriental Gardens and would also provide more than 1,300 homes as well as shops and local amenities.
