Edinburgh wins award

Edinburgh has won the European City of the Year honour in the 2006 Urbanism Awards. The Scottish capital beat off competition from Dublin and London for the accolade, which is organised by the Academy for Urbanism. Ludlow in South Shrophsire won the award for great town while Glasgow's Merchant City was honoured in the great neighbourhood category. London's Borough Market and Marylebone High Street won the great place and great street awards respectively.

Greyfriars shortlist

Seven developers have been shortlisted for the redevelopment of the Greyfriars site in Gloucester city centre. Plans for the 2.46 hectare site, which is owned by English Partnerships, envisage a mixed use neighbourhood, including 400 homes, a neighbourhood centre and new public spaces. The seven shortlisted firms are Bellway Homes, Charles Church Homes, Edward Ware Homes, Grainger Trust plc, Linden Homes, Lovell, and Sanctuary Housing.

Appointment at Isle of Wight Council

Isle of Wight Council has appointed Bill Murphy as head of planning. Murphy, previously head of planning applications at Kent County Council, will take up the post on 8 January. He has worked in both the public and private sectors and has sat on the Environment Agency's southern area regional environmental protection advisory committee.

Transport interchange problems around Motherwell station ...

Transport interchange problems around Motherwell station are to be examined by Atkins. The firm has been appointed by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), the regional transport partnership for the west of Scotland. The four-month contract follows on from the firm's commission to advise SPT on development of a state-of-the-art rail interchange for the town. Atkins will explore proposals for a new station building, improved bus facilities, taxis, traffic calming, a park-and-ride scheme and improved pedestrian links to the town centre. The final report will be delivered in January.

Gloucester Heritage selects Donaldsons

Gloucester Heritage has selected Donaldsons to carry out a feasibility study on a 20,000 to 25,000-seat stadium for the city's rugby union and football clubs. The development at the Barnwood "railway triangle" would enable both the clubs to move from Kingsholm. The triangle is one of Gloucester Heritage's seven key regeneration sites. The scheme could also include leisure facilities, shops or a hotel as well as further housing or student residences. Donaldsons is supported by transport consultancy Savell Bird and Axon, architects Sport Concept and PMP.

Draft regeneration plan for Holbeck unveiled

A draft regeneration plan for Holbeck in south Leeds has been unveiled for a four-week consultation. The proposal describes how Holbeck might change over the next ten years and includes a retail centre, improved pedestrian and cycle paths, more housing and development of major areas such as the Matthew Murray School site. Leeds City Council is also hoping to win £90 million of government regeneration funding to help bring the scheme forward.

Planning application to develop Southsea seafront submitted

A planning application to develop Southsea seafront in Portsmouth was submitted this week. Pierfront Developments hopes to transform the site from nightclubs into more than 100 apartments including renovations as well as a fitness club and shops and cafes. The Savoy Buildings would be redeveloped as homes and the nightclubs would be relocated to the city centre to alleviate antisocial behaviour problems on the seafront.
