Geography teachers are to be encouraged to incorporate local transport, housing and retail provision into their lessons as part of a joint initiative between the Geographical Association and the Academy for Sustainable Communities. Professional development events next March will look at building sustainable communities policy into the curriculum. The project will be piloted across four regions.
Decision on Liverpool's Mann Island delayed

The decision on Liverpool's £120 million Mann Island has been delayed because a UNESCO report was not received in time. The scheme, which features three wedge-shaped buildings next to the Museum of Liverpool, has raised fears that it would harm the city's world heritage status. The planning committee will now hear the application on 7 November.

Homes to be built in west Cornwall

Hundreds of homes are to be built in west Cornwall after regeneration bodies confirmed that they will plough £25 million into buying 60ha of brownfield land. The South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA) and English Partnerships will buy 114 parcels across the former industrial site by negotiation. CPR Regeneration, the urban regeneration company for Camborne, Pool and Redruth, will lead negotiations with the landowners, but the RDA said that it would use its compulsory purchase powers if necessary.

Retail jobs for disaffected youths play a vital role in tackling crime and inner city decline while boosting regeneration, according to research by King Sturge and Business in the Community. Retail jobs teach young people skills and help them to communicate, the study suggests. A total of 50 out of the UK's 88 most deprived areas have average or higher than average job dependence on retail, making the sector a major force for regeneration. Project to boost local services and improve access in Ilfracombe

A £1 million project to boost local services and improve access in Ilfracombe, North Devon, is set to go ahead following the approval of funding worth £577,000. The Government Office for the South West agreed to invest £372,000 through the Objective 2 programme, while the South West of England Regional Development Agency will invest £205,000 through the market and coastal towns initiative. The onestop@ilfracombe project involves renovating and modernising the town council offices. Ilfracombe Town Council has put £70,000 towards the scheme, with further investment from North Devon District Council and Devon County Council.
