Swansea Waterfront scheme to be opened

A gateway entrance at the SA1 Swansea Waterfront scheme is to be opened on 1 October. The event, organised by the Welsh Assembly Government, will mark a milestone in the £200 million regeneration programme, which is designed to revive the waterfront and link it with the city centre. SA1 is one of a number of significant investments in the city supported by the assembly government.

Rising energy costs

North-East firms struggling to meet rising energy costs will from next month receive support from regional development agency One North-East, under a £4.2 million scheme. The RDA claims that the Energy Management Excellence project is the first of its kind in the country and will help up to 160 firms to cut bills.

Swerda reverses decision

The South-West of England Regional Development Agency has reversed its decision not to offer a Glastonbury-based plastics firm a site on the 12.5ha Morlands Enterprise Park. Swerda said it changed its mind when it realised it would not be able to offer Avalon Plastics an alternative site.

George Wimpey selected

The Welsh Assembly Government has selected George Wimpey South Wales as developer for a mixed-use waterfront scheme. The project is designed to create a new riverside community of 480 one- and two-bed homes, shops, cafes and public spaces on a 3ha site at Newport's Rodney Parade near the city centre.

Opening of research centre in Daresbury

A state-of-the-art science research centre at Daresbury in Cheshire was opened by science and innovation minister Lord Sainsbury this week. The Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus received more than £50 million of investment from the Northwest Development Agency. The centre includes office and laboratory space designed to attract science and technology-based businesses to the region.

Appointment at Defence Estate in Sutton Coldfield

Rob Sanderson has been appointed as a senior planner in Defence Estate's planning and development team in Sutton Coldfield. He previously worked for Walsall Council. Ellen O'Grady has joined as a planner. She previously worked for Birmingham City Council.

LMU appoints Drivers Jonas

Drivers Jonas has been appointed as property adviser to London Metropolitan University (LMU). The firm will advise on all estates matters for LMU, which is the largest unitary university in the capital with more than 37,000 students and 3,000 staff. The estate is located at the North Campus on Holloway Road and the City Campus in and around Aldgate. It has about 165,000m2 of space in 22 different buildings. Substantial ongoing site consolidation and redevelopment will be planned in each location driven by LMU's estates strategy, which will be one of Drivers Jonas's first priorities.
